Dead Rising 2, the sequel to the XBox 360 classic was recently released for most major platforms through both physical retailers and Steam. Dead Rising 2 places you in the shoes of Chuck Greene, an extreme sports star who participates in the game Terror is Reality, a sort of Pay-Per-View special for the masses to enjoy zombie killing. Chuck's life however is thrust into chaos after "terrorists" unleash imprisoned zombies, causing what once used to be Las Vegas to become a zombie-infested hell. It's now up to Chuck, with the help of some friends, to find who is at the bottom of the attack and clear his own name before the military arrives.
As a sequel to the first Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2 essentially does what a good sequel should: it keeps what it was good at, fixes previous issues from the first game, and adds just the right amount of content to make the game more interesting. The latter feature comes in the form of combo weapons, weapons that can be crafted from two others, resulting in a superweapon that can truly decimate any zombies that get in your way. The storyline in this iteration of Dead Rising is much the same as the first, someone has to uncover the truth of a conspiracy while attempting to stay alive and save stranded individuals who need assistance. The game has also removed the unwieldy camera feature and improved the NPC AI, resulting in a much more playable experience. The story still feels a little too linear for a sandbox game, but the drastic increase in area to play in truly helps the player to become immersed in the story.
In conclusion, some elements of Dead Rising 2 are good, some are great, and some still need improvement. It fixed many of the problems of its predecessor, but unfortunately kept other known issues such as poor gun mechanics and boss enemies that can feel nigh invincible (Can anyone say having to kill a tiger tamer AND his tiger... early in the game...) Despite some recurring problems, the game is a solid sequel, capturing the essence of the series while adding some cool new twists that help the player have even more fun in an environment where they should truly be terrified.
